Arvel Glaze was born February 24, 1925, in Rockdale County, Georgia, the son of Luther Marion Glaze and his wife Herman Artifical Kilgore. He was not given a middle name.
Arvel's childhood sweetheart was Nellie Laverne Humphries. On her thirteenth birthday, Arvel presented Laverne with the gift of a handkerchief, which one of their children still cherishes. Arvel and Laverne were married on October 26, 1943.
Military Service: During World War II, Arvel served in the United States Army. Family members confirm that he was a P.O.W. for a time, although he did not talk much about it.
While serving in the U.S. Army, he sent Laverne a "sweetheart poem" cushion. The cushion, blue with gold and red fringe, had the following poem printed on it:

Atlanta Fire Department (AFD) for 29 years.
